Giorgi Bagrationi was born in Tbilisi in 1962. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Georgian Technical University in 1984, and completed his postgraduate studies in art history at the G. Chubinashvili Institute of Georgian Art History in 1993. He worked as a practicing architect for several years, specializing in contemporary architecture and the restoration and adaptation of historical monuments. He also worked on various projects in the field of cultural heritage studies from the perspective of its recording. He also collaborated with several publishing houses on the design and layout of over 1,000 books and brochures. In the early 1990s, he participated in the creation of the first Georgian computer fonts.
His completed projects include: Recording monuments during a speleological expedition in the Ktsia-Khrami region (1983-1986); Measurements of the David Gareji Natlismtsemeli complex (1985-1987); Measurements of the rock-cut monastery complex “Kondamian” (1987); Registration and inventory of Javakheti monuments (1992); Measurements of Georgian monuments during the expedition organized by the G. Chubinashvili Foundation in Turkey (historical Tao-Klarjeti) (1994-1995); “Tao-Klarjeti Virtual Museum” – a scientific expedition and preparation of a website (UNESCO project, 2007); Art history study of the historical and architectural restoration of the historical district of Lanchvali in Mestia (2009); Scientific expeditions to Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey within the framework of the project “Creation of an interactive historical and geographical map and a reference and illustrative database of Georgian architectural monuments located outside Georgia” (2012-2014); Scientific expeditions to Turkey within the framework of the project “Georgian fortresses of Tao-Klarjeti” (2014-2017). Scientific expeditions to Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey within the framework of the project “Natural disasters in the South Caucasus: historical earthquakes and related natural phenomena from ancient times to the 19th century” (2017-2019); within the framework of the project “Truso – historical and ethnocultural problems” – scientific expeditions to Truso (2020); Study of architectural monuments of the Khad Gorge and its environs (2020-2021); Scientific expeditions to Samtskhe within the framework of the project “Historical monuments of Samtskhe” (2021-2023); Scientific expeditions to Samtskhe within the framework of the project “Architectural monuments of the 9th-10th centuries of the Borjomi Gorge” (2025-2027).
He has published articles and reviews in encyclopedic publications devoted to Georgian architectural monuments (“Description of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Georgia,” “Georgia,” “The Fortifications of Tao-Klarjeti,” “Truso – Historical and Ethnocultural Problems,” etc.).
