About the Site

Carved into a sandstone cliff above the Kura River, Uplistsikhe is one of the oldest and most remarkable rock-hewn settlements in the Caucasus. The site dates back to the late Bronze Age and developed into an important urban and religious centre.

Visitors will encounter rock-cut streets, halls, temples, a theatre, water-management features and a medieval church rising above the ancient cave city.

About the Site

Founded in the 6th century, David Gareji is one of the most significant monastic landscapes of the Caucasus. The complex extends across the semi-desert hills of eastern Georgia and includes cave churches, cells, chapels, refectories and living quarters.

Lavra, the founding monastery, contains the cave church and tomb of Saint David Garejeli and remains an active place of pilgrimage.
